 GRE  exam syllabus  many universities and colleges across the US, Canada, UK, and other nations utilize Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores as a criterion for admission into their graduate-level programs. The ETS GRE (revised) General Test assesses the overall knowledge and skills of the test-taker across three primary areas—analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning. The scores reflect the candidate’s capability to pursue graduate studies in various fields.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is administered several times a year, with a range of dates available for registration.

Important Considerations: 

Flexibility: The GRE is available at numerous test centers and also offers an at-home testing option, providing flexibility in scheduling.

Registration: You can complete your GRE registration online via the ETS website.

Test Dates: The ETS website features a detailed calendar of available test dates. Additionally, you can find specific dates for your area, including Chennai, Kolkata, and other cities.

Timeliness: Be mindful of your application deadlines and plan to take the GRE at least three months prior to your application deadline.

Validity: GRE scores remain valid for a period of five years.

 GRE exam syllabus  ETS also provides GRE Subject Tests in multiple disciplines. In this article, we will focus solely on the General Test, omitting the Subject Tests.

GRE SYLLABUS

The GRE presents the General Test in two formats—computer-based and paper-based. The computer-based test has a total duration of approximately three hours and 45 minutes, comprising six sections, or “measures,” as they are officially termed: one section dedicated to analytical writing, two sections each for verbal and quantitative reasoning, and an additional section that may include questions from either verbal or quantitative reasoning, which is not factored into the scoring and is not timed. The test always commences with the analytical writing section; the remaining sections may appear in any sequence.

The analytical writing component consists of two tasks (“analyze an issue” and “analyze an argument”) to be completed within 30 minutes each. The verbal and quantitative sections each contain 20 questions; however, while 30 minutes are allotted for each of the two verbal sections, 35 minutes are provided for each of the two quantitative sections.

 The sequence of the sections is not disclosed, meaning the test-taker is unaware of which section is unscored and intended solely for research purposes.  Nevertheless, a research section may occasionally be identified as such and may follow the five scored sections.

As previously mentioned, the GRE is also available in a paper-based format. The primary segments remain consistent—analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.
